What to expect from the King’s Speech and what bills will be included

King Charles will arrive in Parliament at 11:20 am tomorrow in full regalia as Keir Starmer’s Government begins the process of turning its winning manifesto into law.

The King’s Speech is one of Parliament’s big set-piece moments, and takes place most years.

As well as an opportunity to show off the best of British pageantry and tradition, it’s a key moment in the country’s constitution for the Government to introduce new laws to parliament, which will then be debated over the course of six to nine months before passing into law.

Labour’s manifesto contained dozens of policies, and it’s thought that tomorrow will see the introduction of around 20 to 25 new Bills to the Commons.

Here’s everything we think might be included:

What will happen on the day?

His Majesty King Charles will set off in the gold state coach, which has been used at every coronation since 1831.

He will arrive at around 11:20, with the royal procession seven minutes later before he is seated on the throne in the House of Lords at 11:30.

The day will be packed with tradition, including the traditional slamming of the Commons door in the face of Blackrod, and the procession through parliament by the Speaker and MPs.

Sir Keir, his government and others including Rishi Sunak will congregate in the Lords to hear the speech, which is in fact written by the Government and not The King.

They will then return to the Commons for the King’s Speech debate, which may also be a prime opportunity for Tory leadership candidates to make their voices heard.

The debate itself traditionally begins with two light-hearted and humorous speeches by backbenchers who propose and second the speech.

It will then be followed by speeches from Sir Keir and Rishi Sunak, before backbenchers and other smaller party leaders get a turn.

The debate itself will go on for a number of days.
