Hailed as one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights, this European city should be your next holiday destination. The incredible lights have a firm place on almost everyone’s bucket list, and what better place to experience them than Reykjavik, Iceland.

The city has several ‘light-hunting’ expeditions that set off in peak season, however the natural phenomenon is not as easy to spot as you may think. One of the best times to go is October, as there are longer, darker nights that are not too cold, so you can enjoy the expeditions without almost freezing.

In October, you also have a better chance of spotting the beautiful lights as the skies tend to be clearer. It’s also not peak tourism season, so it shouldn’t be too busy.

Iceland and the experience of seeing the Northern Lights in the country have been highly praised by travellers far and wide.

One traveller who joined the Reykjavik Excursions Northern Lights Tour wrote on the tourism advice website Tripadvisor: “After spending time at one location observing various different light shows, we were taken to another. We thought we had seen the best of the Northern Lights and were all strapped in ready to head back, when the bus lights went off, Kalli switched off the engine and told us to get off the bus quick. The Northern Lights show we then experienced was out of this world, Kalli crying out, ‘It’s a corona!’, the best of the spectacles. Thanks to him and his persistence, we experienced something truly magical.”

Speaking about the Northern Lights spectacle that can be admired in Iceland, TimeOut’s Jamie Inglis wrote: “I caught a hint of the Northern Lights on the edge of Reykjavik, and then saw them again further out in Iceland. In their full glory, the lights danced across the sky in greens, blues, purples and everything in-between, at mind-boggling scale.”

While you are in Reykjavik, make the most of everything the incredible city has to offer. At the Sky Lagoon, you’ll find one of the country’s infamous geothermal pools.

The water is heated naturally beneath the earth’s surface, and essentially becomes a hot spring that can be enjoyed. The steaming baths are powered by Iceland’s volcanic core, so you definetly won’t be cold.

The city has a rich cultural and historical heritage, with the infamous Hallgrímskirkja church tower standing tall over Reykjavik. The 73-metre tall structure has stunning panoramic views, and makes for the perfect photo opportunity.
