Strictly Come Dancing presenter Tess Daly and fellow TV star Vernon Kay have been married for over 20 years, but they seemingly still have their differences while deciding what to spend their money on.
Vernon even admitted that once a year, his wife “would rather lock him up” as he tends to go overboard when hosting a party for Bonfire Night each November.
Speaking to Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett for their Dish podcast in 2023, the BBC Radio 2 DJ gave an insight into the celebrations the couple host at their family home.
When quizzed on if they ever do dinner parties, Vernon replied: “Kind of, I like things like Bonfire Night, because Bonfire Night is usually chippy night, and I like fireworks – I like explosions!
“So, Bonfire Night, for me… I think Tess would rather lock me up, because I spent a fortune – I always do on Bonfire Night! We get a load of fish and chips in…”
Chef Angela then interjected: “I’m just going to come and sit outside your house and see the display, it would be amazing”, to which Vernon declared, “You’re more than welcome”.
Continuing to describe the occasion, Vernon told the duo: “We have buffet-style fish and chips, we get a load of fish and chips in and put them on the hot plate – we have a warming Lazy Susan – so it spins and warms! It’s perfect, absolutely brilliant.”
Vernon explained that he prefers to order a takeaway for the event because “posh food” is too difficult to juggle with setting up the fireworks display.
He shared: “I like entertaining with no fuss, because as soon as you get into posh food…” Angela then promptly agreed: “You have to think about it too much, it’s an effort”.
“Especially with large volumes of people and fireworks,” Vernon added. “We’ve got a lot of friends with kids, so I think it’s a case of, are we going to have people round with or without kids?”
He joked: “I’m not talking ‘keys in the bowl party!’ Crikey, oh gosh no! I mean, are the adults going to get involved, end up on the patio, sat around the fire?”
Meanwhile, Tess has also revealed she and Vernon tend to have a different approach when it comes to their fitness regimes.
The gym at their home in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire is where Tess says an ongoing “battle” takes place between the couple.
Speaking on the Power Hour podcast with Adrienne Herbert, Tess, 55, says that Vernon likes to share his wisdom when the pair use their gym together.
Addressing the subject in March last year, Tess explained: “If we went to the gym together, which is basically a shed at the bottom of our garden with a few mats on the floor and a few weights, I’d get in there, and he is very knowledgeable, bless him, and he tries, but he’s like, ‘yeah, do this, this is better for you and makes the muscle extension work better…’
“And I’m a bit like, ‘okay, I know what I’m doing, I’m just going to go over here with my little dumbbells, I’m going to do this, and I know what works for me, and I know’. So it gets a bit like the battle of who knows the most.”
