The Hanua Two team set out to participate in the 2024-2025 Suva Volleyball Pre-Knockout Tournament to engage youths in volleyball and to prevent them from indulging in criminal activities.

The team defeated Tamavua Bulls Two by two sets at the National Netball Centre in Suva yesterday.

The team is made up of Rotuman youths from the Raiwai community.

Shane Kitione was a stand out player for the side.

Kitione formed his team, which he now leads as captain.

He says the team’s main aim is to encourage the young players to step out of their comfort zones and take part in competitions of a larger scale for recognition.

“We need to encourage them to try the things they have never experienced before, because they have played only in the suburbs and everything. They don’t come into greater tournaments for exposure,” he said.

Kitione added, the sport was a pathway towards facilitating an environment where the players would not be privy to illicit substances and alcohol.

“All the teams focus is to win, but not to win-win the tournament but to win our children away from drugs and alcohol,” he emphasised.

The captain on a concluding note, urged the team’s supporters to lean on enhancing their spiritual understanding by embracing the Lord.

“Knowing the Lord Jesus is better than anything else to know in the world.”

The competition continues next weekend.
