DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica visited Zespri International while in New Zealand to learn about their successful cooperative model, the Ministry of Trade reported.

Zespri, it stated, is a thriving $2 billion industry and the world’s largest exporter of kiwifruit, recognised for its innovative marketing strategies and strong brand presence.

“The company operates as a private sector cooperative, which allows it to harness the collective strength of its growers while ensuring high-quality standards and sustainable practices.”

Minister Kamikamica has a similar vision for developing the avocado industry in Fiji, the Ministry stated.

“Zespri has offered to provide guidance and support, leveraging its extensive experience in international markets to help Fiji maximise the potential of its agricultural sector.

“While Fiji boasts a wealth of tropical fruits, including avocados, papayas, and pineapples, these resources have yet to be fully commercialised.

“To diversify Fiji’s economy, we are working towards implementing similar cooperative models and establishing robust industry structures that can enhance production, marketing, and export capabilities.”

DPM Kamikamica is currently on an official visit to New Zealand, where he is engaging with industry leaders to further these goals.
