The Chinese community in Fiji, along with dignitaries and local officials, gathered to celebrate the dual occasions of the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival, at the Vineyard Palace in Suva on Sunday. This momentous occasion underscored the deepening relationship between China and Fiji, highlighting the significant contributions of the Chinese community to the Fijian society and the broader implications of this partnership. China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, had shared interesting insights at the event highlighting the collaboration and the journey between the Chinese government, Fiji and both its people, acknowledging the Fijians of Chinese descent and their immense contribution to the Fijian economy. “The relationship between China and Fiji has flourished since the establishment of diplomatic ties 49 years ago,” Mr Zhou said. “This growing bond is not only evident in the economic and political spheres but also in the everyday lives of the people in both countries. “The recent visit by Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to China further cemented these ties, resulting in a series of agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation and mutual benefits,” he said in his address at the celebration. Mr Zhou said China’s commitment to its Pacific allies, including Fiji, was reflected in its substantial investments and development aid. “China has become a major trading partner for Fiji, contributing to the latter’s economic growth through infrastructure projects and trade. “The support has ranged from building roads and schools to providing aid during natural disasters,” he said Such initiatives have significantly impacted Fijian development, showcasing China’s role as a key partner in Fiji’s progress.

The Mid-Autumn Festival and its symbolism

Mr Zhou said the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a significant cultural event in China, symbolising family reunion and prosperity. Celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, the festival is marked by the full moon, which represents completeness and unity. He said this year’s celebration in Fiji was not just about honouring this tradition but also about acknowledging the profound connection between Chinese culture and Fijian society. The festival’s importance was highlighted by the presence of key figures such as the President of Fiji Ratu Wiliame Katonivere and senior Government ministers, who joined the celebrations and expressed their appreciation for the Chinese community’s contributions to Fiji. The event served as a reminder of the cultural exchange and mutual respect that define the China-Fiji relationship. “The Chinese community in Fiji has played an instrumental role in fostering the relationship between the two nations,” Mr Zhou said. “Since the arrival of Chinese immigrants in 1855, the community has become an integral part of Fijian society.” “Their contributions span various aspects of Fijian life, from economic development to cultural enrichment.” The ambassador also said the Chinese immigrants in Fiji were primarily engaged in agriculture and trade, helping to develop the country’s economy. “Over the years, their involvement has expanded to include a wide range of professions and sectors. “Today, the Chinese community is actively involved in local businesses, education, and social services, contributing significantly to the country’s development.” He said in recent years, the Chinese community has organised numerous events and activities to celebrate traditional Chinese festivals, promote Chinese language education, and support local charitable causes. For instance, the community has been proactive in organising celebrations for Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival, which not only preserve Chinese cultural heritage but also enhance cross-cultural understanding in Fiji. He said during times of crisis, such as natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese community in Fiji had shown remarkable solidarity and generosity. “They have extended their support through donations and volunteer efforts, demonstrating their commitment to the well-being of the broader Fijian society, achievements and future prospects.”

China’s National Day

Mr Zhou also highlighted the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China as one that marked a period of extraordinary progress and transformation. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the country has experienced unprecedented development across various sectors. The achievements in poverty alleviation, infrastructure development, and environmental protection are notable examples of China’s progress. China’s dedication to its global partnerships is evident in its approach to international relations. Through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, and the Global Security Initiative, China aimed to build a community with a shared future for mankind. Mr Zhou said the initiatives highlighted China’s commitment to global cooperation and mutual benefit, reinforcing its role as a key player on the world stage. For Fiji, the strong relationship with China offers numerous opportunities for further development.
The ongoing collaboration between the two countries is expected to yield continued benefits in areas such as infrastructure, trade, and cultural exchange. As both nations look forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations next year, there is a shared vision of deepening cooperation and achieving greater mutual prosperity. “The upcoming year will also mark the 170th anniversary of Chinese presence in Fiji, a milestone that will provide a platform to reflect on the historical contributions of the Chinese community and their enduring impact on Fijian society.
“This anniversary will be an occasion to celebrate the achievements of the Chinese community and to reaffirm the commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship between China and Fiji,” Mr Zhou said. As both countries continue to build on their partnership, the future promises to be filled with opportunities for growth, cooperation, and mutual prosperity.
